One chance to break the rules

These private clubs equipped with a large shared kitchen and long tables, which you can only go if invited by a member, are part of the gastronomic Basque culture since the s. XIX, and are distinctly operated on a system based on trust.

The members, organised in different groups of friends, bring their own fresh produce for cooking. They have free access to the communal stock as well as their drinks from their cellar. When the banquet ends, they write in a piece of paper exactly what they have consumed, collect the money, and put it in an envelope deposited in a mailbox ready for it.

We had this wonderful opportunity to live this experience, with groups of guests, thanks to Gure txoko who opened us their doors. We can assure you that it is worth it!

Yesterday was a very special night in San Sebastian. All the gastronomic societies opened their doors to the public. Full of people who wanted to enjoy the festivities, the big day of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
