Traveling during Asparagus Season.
We just hosted a fun group. Their request: gastronomy. Specifically, “asparagus”, so they had to come during its season …
Local producers gather around the Abastos Market in Vitoria-Gasteiz where they display wonderful fruits and vegetables. Going up to the terrace, it’s nice to see the colors of the ECO products and taste some txakoli*, Gastheiz beer and Rioja Alavesa wines.
For us, it is essential that our guests feel like a part of the local environment, so we decided to go on Thursday, the day when traditionally, farmers, ranchers, and artisans meet. They come from the different parts of the city; making it the perfect day to talk to them. Of course, on this occasion, we talk about asparagus. Although our millenary white wine * was a huge hit as well as the Rioja Alavesa wineries that give international fame to the region.
In the bars of the ground floor, they serve products from the market; creating a gastronomic offer of high quality, with seasonal dishes such as the peas with curdled egg yolks, the candied fresh beans with Iberian ham …
The cooking center is situated on the first floor. A place with different spaces designed to promote Alava’s gastronomic offers. It has a kitchen of more than 180 m2, where you can organize tailor-made workshops for leisure groups or companies.
Upon leaving, we went to the Txiki bar, where we had one of the worlds’ best pintxo potato omelet; prepared using Alavese potatoes, which are very popular among the country’s best restaurants. Some of our guests managed to get the actual recipe written in a napkin, the recipe they have been using since 1981. Unfortunately, they could not do was taking the potatoes on the plane!
As one of them said: “that means we have to come back!”.
